US stock index futures edged higher on Monday as the market optimistically anticipated that lawmakers would reach an agreement to raise the US debt ceiling and avoid a catastrophic default. Several Federal Reserve officials are scheduled to deliver speeches this week.
At the time of writing, Dow Jones futures were up 0.4%, S&P 500 futures were up 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures were up 0.3%.
In Europe, Germany’s DAX index rose 0.2%, the UK’s FTSE 100 index rose 0.5%, France’s CAC 40 index rose 0.5%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 index rose 0.3%.
The US debt ceiling remains a focal point for investors this week, with strategists warning that market turbulence and economic turmoil could ensue if lawmakers fail to agree on raising the government’s $31.4 trillion borrowing limit.
