On June 14, according to media reports, the Swedish mining company Boliden said that due to “unsustainable financial losses”, the company will suspend production at Europe’s largest zinc mine in Ireland and will lay off 650 employees next month.
The company also said second-quarter earnings before interest and taxes were expected to be negatively impacted by a fire at its largest smelter in Sweden’s Ronnskar that was forced to shut down overnight.
Ronnskar, a major producer of copper, zinc, lead and other metals, has halted other production at the company until further notice due to safety reasons.
Boliden’s Tara mine in Ireland has a zinc concentrate of 103,000 metal tonnes and a lead concentrate of 14,000 metal tonnes in 2022.
