On June 21, according to media reports, the Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association (BSRA) has decided to increase the price of sugar by up to 25 taka/kg, effective from June 22.
A document showed that the association had informed the Bangladesh Customs Board of its decision and sought approval.
Although setting sugar prices is within the government’s jurisdiction, the Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association appears to be deciding the price of sugar, the Bangladesh Consumers Association said.
Currently, the price of sugar in the market is higher than the government fixed price. The Bangladesh government has set the price of bulk sugar sold in the retail market at Tk 120 per kg and packaged sugar at Tk 125 per kg.
But the price in the market is 130-140 taka per kg. There is a shortage of packaged sugar in the market as mills join forces with distributors.
